Our story

Child protection services are essential for ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable children. However, when a child is removed from their home and placed in foster care, it can be a devastating experience for parents. In addition to the emotional toll of being separated from their child, parents also face numerous challenges during this difficult time One of the biggest problems parents face when their child is removed by child protection services is the lack of control and involvement in the decision-making process. Parents often feel powerless and helpless, as decisions about their child's placement and care are made by social workers and other professionals. This lack of control can lead to feelings of frustration, anger, and even mistrust towards the child protection system.
Another major challenge for parents is the uncertainty and fear of the unknown. Parents may not know where their child is being placed, who is caring for them, or when they will be able to see them again. This can cause immense anxiety and stress, as parents worry about their child's safety and well-being while they are separated. Parents also face practical challenges when their child is removed, such as financial difficulties. The costs associated with legal representation, court fees, and travel expenses to visit their child can add up quickly, placing an additional burden on already stressed parents. In some cases, parents may also struggle to meet the requirements set by child protection services in order to reunite with their child, such as attending parenting classes or therapy sessions.
Furthermore, the stigma and shame associated with having a child removed by child protection services can be incredibly difficult for parents to navigate. They may face judgment from family, friends, and even strangers, who may not understand the complexities of their situation. This can lead to feelings of isolation and guilt, as parents try to cope with the loss of their child and the challenges they are facing. Despite these challenges, it is important for parents to try to stay engaged with the child protection system and work towards reunification with their child. Seeking support from family, friends, and professionals can help parents navigate this challenging time and build a strong foundation for their family's future.
That is where the Halo Foundation for Families and Children Incorporated comes in. The Foundation aims to provide a “one stop shop” where parents can find advocates, legal advice, financial advice, psychological support, classes on topics such as parenting or conflict management and more all from one source. As far as we are aware, no other charity in Australia provides, or aims to provide, such a service. In conclusion, when a child is removed by child protection services, parents face a myriad of challenges that can be overwhelming and isolating. It is crucial for parents to seek support, stay informed, and advocate for their rights in order to navigate this difficult process and work towards reuniting with their child. By understanding the challenges they may face, our aim is to provide the help they need enabling the parents to navigate this difficult time with strength, resilience and hope for a better future.
